What is shiatsu?
Shiatsu literally translates to mean ‘finger pressure’. It is a holistic healing therapy originating from Japan, in which pressure is applied to acupressure points and other areas of the body. It is based on the teachings of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).
Traditional Chinese Medicine teaches that vital energy (Qi) flows through the body via a network of channels known as meridians. Each meridian connects with an internal organ. Health is reliant on the balance and free flow of Qi through these meridian-organ complexes. If the flow of Qi becomes blocked, pain or illness may result.
Shiatsu aims to access these meridians through pressure points and other massage techniques to promote this flow of energy and support the body and its innate ability to heal itself.
What can i expect in a treatment?
Shiatsu is usually performed on the floor on a futon. The client remains clothed in comfortable attire. Treatments may include a combination of holding, rocking, stretching or joint rotations. Pressure can be applied along the meridian or to specific points with the fingers, thumbs, palms, elbows, forearms, knees or feet. Pressure may be light or firm depending on the client. Shiatsu provides a whole body treatment which feels like a deeply connected massage.
